Description

Background: Little is known about injury mechanisms and playing situations for injuries in elite ice hockey.

Purpose: The aim of this project is to perform observational studies using video analyses of the injury mechanisms of different types of injuries in male senior elite ice hockey.

Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of male ice hockey players in the Elitehockey League starting in the 2023/2024 season. Estimated duration of the study will be 3-4 seasons. We will use AthleteMonitoring.com to record all time loss injuries occurring in games. All ice hockey games at senior level are stored at TV2 play. We will use recordings of these games to analyze injury situations. Our analyses will include information ranging from the events leading to the injury situation (playing situation, player and opponent behaviour), to a detailed biomechanical description of the whole body and joint biomechanics at the time of injury.

Implications: This project will provide new knowledge about injury mechanisms in senior elite ice hockey, and these data can provide guidance when developing injury prevention interventions for ice hockey in the future.
