Description

In the same biopsies from the same patient groups as in the inflammatory study we will do an immune-histochemical study to compare nerve regeneration and nerve numbers between the groups. This may give information about the pain mechanisms in tendon injuries. The total number of nerve fibers is identified with antisera against protein gene-product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) (Wilkinson 1989, Lundberg 1988,Gulbenkian 1987). Nerve regeneration is evaluated by the existence of growth-associated protein 43/B-50 (GAP-43/B-50), which is associated with nerve development and regeneration (Oestreicher 1983). If possible, we will also study the sensory innervation with the nevropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P, which both are important in the pain transmission (Gibson 1984, Lembeck 1987, Wiesenfeld-Hallin 1984, Ziche 1990). Studies of CGRP and substance P are not yet part of the project protocol, but may be included later.
