Description

Artificial turf is in extensive use in both grassroots and elite football in areas with difficult climatic conditions. A Swedish study found no evidence of increased risk of injury on third generation artificial turf compared to playing on natural grass in professional football (Ekstrand et al 2006).

The aim of the study was to compare the risk of acute injury on third generation artificial turf to natural grass in male professional football.

Methods

A prospective injury registration in the male Norwegian professional league (N= 14 teams). Injuries and exposure data on both turf types are registered by team medical staff through the league surveillance system during three seasons (2004-2008). An injury is recorded when a player is unable to take fully part in football training or match.
