Description

Background: Little is known regarding the overall health of young elite athletes.

Aim: Our aim was to describe the prevalence and severity of health problems in a cohort of young elite athletes representing a variety of endurance, team and technical sports.

Methods: Young elite athletes (N=260, 16 yrs) from different Sport Academy High Schools in Norway, and a group of their teammates (N=60) attending regular high schools, participated in the study. We monitored their health weekly for 26 weeks using the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre (OSTRC) questionnaire on health problems.

Implications: This is the first study to present prospective self-reported injury and illness data on young elite athletes representing a variety of endurance, team and technical sports. More knowledge in this field will hopefully contribute both in promoting good health and preventing injuries and illnesses in this population.
